Project Description

Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission Regional Backbone Initiative

After creating a Public Relations (PR) Division for The O’Connor Group, we competed for and won the contract to plan, manage and host a news conference to earn national media exposure for the Regional Backbone Initiative (RBI) Network.

We created the campaign, “The Roots of Progress,” a detailed communications plan, built the invite list, distributed a media advisory, save the date email,  letter invitation, a media kit and all the event logistics, including signage, agenda, audio visual, flags, seating of elected officials, media room for interviews, decorations and then some. The media kit included the embargoed news release, background about the project, a detailed timeline and lapel pins.

The press conference drew over 150 attendees with standing room only. More than 1,500 print column inches of media coverage was earned by 34 Virginia and 30 national outlets. The online release received 1,134 hits from 21 countries, as well as 12 states excluding Virginia. Earned coverage was valued at $35,000 for  a 178% ROI on the client’s investment. The work and the initiative won multiple awards and recognition.

ABOUT THE INITIATIVE:  The$12 million initiative was designed to promote economic development opportunities by attracting technology-based business and industry to Southside Virginia by creating a 700-mile, open-access telecommunications infrastructure to connect 5 cities, 20 counties, 56 industrial parks and give high-speed Internet access to nearly 700,000 citizens and more than 19,000 businesses.  The project stemmed from a unique collaboration between the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission (VTICRC),  the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) and the Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative (MBC).
